We want to hike from Haputale down the Devils Staircase to Bambarakanda falls. Is the trail marked or do we need a local tracker.

You absolutely need a tracker/guide. The "Devils Staircase" is stunning, but it is a maze of unmarked estate roads, goat tracks, and thick pine forests. Google Maps is useless there. If you take a wrong turn, you can get hopelessly lost in steep terrain. Hire a local village guide in Haputale; it costs around 4000-5000 LKR and ensures your safety.

Bring lots of water. There are no shops on that route.

Wear leech socks! The bottom section near the falls is crawling with them.

Can we do it in reverse, from the falls up to Haputale.

You can, but it is a brutal uphill climb for 14km. Going downhill is much more enjoyable.

We did this with a guide. It was the highlight of our trip. Unbelievable views and zero tourists.
