We want an extreme wildlife adventure. Are there any hiking trails where we can safely see wild elephants without being in a safari jeep.

Walking on foot near wild elephants is incredibly dangerous. They run faster than humans and are very territorial. However, if you want a safe walking adventure, you can do a guided walk with the indigenous Vedda community in Gal Oya National Park. They know the jungle intimately and can track safely on foot, keeping you at a proper distance.

Do not hike in Minneriya or Yala buffer zones alone. Tourists get killed doing this.

No, Udawalawe strictly requires you to be inside a safari jeep at all times for your own safety.

Just stick to the jeep. Getting charged by a wild bull elephant is not a fun adventure.

Gal Oya is amazing. You can also do a boat safari there and watch them swim.
