I am a passionate birder and biodiversity enthusiast. Is the Sinharaja Forest Reserve worth the long detour from the main tourist trail and what unique wildlife will I actually see.

Sinharaja is absolutely a must visit for any serious nature enthusiast. As Sri Lanka last remaining primary tropical rainforest and a UNESCO World Heritage site it harbors incredible biodiversity found nowhere else on earth. Over fifty percent of the trees, mammals, and butterflies here are endemic species. Birders can spot rare endemics like the Sri Lanka blue magpie, red faced malkoha, and Sri Lanka frogmouth on the famous mixed species feeding flocks.

Hire a knowledgeable government licensed guide at the entrance for around three thousand rupees. They have incredible eyes for spotting camouflaged frogs, snakes, lizards, and well hidden birds. Wear leech socks as the forest floor is genuinely full of hungry leeches especially after any rain. The Kudawa entrance on the western side offers the most popular and accessible trails.
