For the famous trails (like Little Adams Peak or Lipton Seat), you do not need a guide. But if your goal is truly hidden waterfalls deep in the working tea estates (like the upper unmapped tiers of Bambarakanda or Aberdeen Falls), YES, you absolutely need a local tracker. The tea estates are a maze of identical-looking dirt tracks that end in dead drops.

Plus, a local guide will know which pools are safe to swim in and which ones have deadly undercurrents.

We used Maps.me to find a secret waterfall and ended up in a restricted factory zone. Get a guide.
