I heard there are ancient hidden stone ruins in the forests above Haputale. Are there any marked trails to find them or do we need a local tracker.

You are likely thinking of the Kuragala monastery ruins or ancient forest hermitages. There are absolutely no marked trails. The tea estates quickly turn into dense, trackless pine and eucalyptus forests. You MUST hire a local village tracker. If you go alone, you risk getting hopelessly lost, facing wild boar, or getting severe leech bites. Your guesthouse can arrange a tracker.

Some of those ancient sites are still used by meditating forest monks. Ensure you are respectful and quiet if you find them.

We tried to find a waterfall ruin alone and got lost for four hours. Do not underestimate how thick the jungle gets.
