I keep hearing the Kandy to Ella train ride is the most beautiful in the world. How far in advance can I reserve the observation car seats and which class is best.

Honestly second class reserved is the sweet spot for tourists. You get a guaranteed seat with opening windows for those iconic photos hanging out the door. First class observation has tinted sealed windows which ruins photography. Avoid third class unless you enjoy standing for seven hours in a packed carriage.
