I am visiting in August. Is it better to book an expensive balcony seat or sit with the locals on the street to see the elephants and dancers.

Sitting on the street is the most authentic experience but you must arrive by noon and stay in your spot for many hours before the parade starts at night. For most tourists, booking a balcony seat at a shop or hotel along the route is much more comfortable. These usually cost around fifty to eighty dollars. Ensure you book weeks in advance as they sell out. The view from above allows you to see the full scale of the dancers and the caparisoned elephants.

Try to book a seat on the second or third night of the Randoli Perahera for the most grand display. Remember that it is a religious event, so even in private seating areas, you should dress modestly and respect the local customs.
