How do I reserve a specific window seat on Sri Lankan trains?

The official Sri Lanka Railways booking system does not allow specific seat selection unfortunately. Seats are assigned automatically based on availability. However the private observation carriages like ExpoRail, Rajadhani, and Blue Train do offer assigned seating with clear seat maps during online booking. These private carriages cost roughly three times the regular government fare but guarantee comfortable reserved seating.
For the absolute best scenic views on the Kandy to Ella route request the right side seats heading east from Kandy. The tea plantations, valleys, and iconic Nine Arch Bridge views are all visible from that side. On the return journey from Ella to Kandy the left side becomes the scenic side as the view reverses.
Arrive at your departure station at least forty five minutes before departure even with a reserved seat. The trains do not have overhead luggage storage so bring only a small backpack if possible. Larger bags can be placed under seats or in the gap between carriages but watch them closely at every stop.

TukTuk or tour drivers take you to "gem museums" or "government-certified" gem shops. They receive huge commissions (up to 40%) on anything you buy. Prices are inflated 3-10x the actual value.
Men approach tourists near Temple of the Tooth offering to be guides. After the tour, they demand large "donations" or guide fees (5000-10000 LKR).
