I have already visited Galle Fort. Is it worth traveling to the north to see the Jaffna Fort as well or are they very similar.

They are quite different. While Galle Fort is a living city with boutiques and residents, Jaffna Fort is primarily a military monument and historical site. Jaffna Fort is made of coral and has a distinct star shaped layout. It offers a more rugged and historical atmosphere with views of the lagoon rather than the open ocean. It is definitely worth visiting for the unique architecture and the peaceful sunset walks on the ramparts.

The historical significance is also different as Jaffna Fort was heavily contested during the conflict. You can still see the remains of the Dutch Governor residence. It is much less touristy than Galle and gives you a real sense of the northern peninsula history.
