Southwest (Colombo, south coast, hill country) is in the Yala monsoon season - expect afternoon/evening showers but mornings are often clear. The east coast and north are generally drier and sunnier right now. Wildlife parks in the dry zone (Yala, Udawalawe, Minneriya) are excellent during this period as animals gather at water sources. Have flexible plans and indoor backup activities for rainy afternoons.
The rain is usually short but heavy. Mornings are often beautiful. Many travelers are surprised how little it actually disrupts plans if you plan around it.
