My parents are in their late sixties and want to visit Sigiriya. Are the stairs too steep and exhausting for seniors or can they realistically make it to the top.

Sigiriya climb involves about twelve hundred steps in total and takes roughly ninety minutes at a relaxed pace. The climb is moderately challenging but absolutely doable for fit seniors who take their time with frequent rest breaks. The metal spiral staircase to the frescoes can feel slightly intimidating for those with vertigo. Start the climb at six in the morning when the gates open to avoid the brutal midday heat. Wear proper grip shoes and carry plenty of water. If your parents have heart conditions or severe knee problems consider visiting nearby Pidurangala rock instead which offers stunning views of Sigiriya itself with a much shorter climb.
