I want to see elephants but care about animal welfare. Which parks are best and what safety rules apply?

Udawalawe and Minneriya are excellent for elephant sightings. Safaris are conducted in jeeps with experienced guides who know how to keep a safe distance. You must stay in the vehicle at all times — elephants are wild and unpredictable. The best parks have strict rules and good management. Avoid places that offer 'elephant rides' or close-contact experiences, as these are often unethical. Ethical viewing means staying in the vehicle, not feeding or approaching animals, and choosing operators who follow park regulations. Early morning and late afternoon are usually best for sightings.

Udawalawe and Minneriya are the most reliable for elephant sightings with proper safari protocols. Stay in the jeep and follow your guide's instructions.
