I enjoy hiking. How do I know which trails are suitable and when I should hire a guide?

Many popular hiking areas (Ella, Knuckles, Horton Plains) have trails of varying difficulty. Some are well-marked and suitable for independent hikers, while others are remote, poorly marked, or require local knowledge for safety. Guides are recommended for longer or more challenging hikes, especially in less-visited areas or during rainy season when trails can be slippery and navigation harder. Some national parks require guides. For shorter, well-known trails, independent hiking is often fine if you're prepared with water, proper shoes, and weather awareness. Local guesthouses or tourism offices can advise on current trail conditions and whether a guide is advisable for your planned route. Safety should always come first.
