The prices for standard local alcohol like Lion Beer or DCSL Arrack are exactly the same in Jaffna as they are anywhere else on the island. The government heavily regulates alcohol pricing nationwide.
If you buy directly from a licensed Wine Store you will pay the standard retail price. However if you drink at a high end hotel bar like Jetwing Jaffna expect to pay a significant premium for the service and ambiance.
Imported foreign liquor is incredibly expensive everywhere in Sri Lanka due to massive import taxes so sticking to the local brands is always the smartest financial choice.
Scam Watch: colombo
Driver claims the meter is broken and quotes an inflated flat rate. Common on arrival at airport or railway stations when tourists are tired and disoriented.
Drivers wearing official-looking uniforms claim to be "government-approved" and charge 3-5x normal rates. They may have fake badges or ID cards.
Women with babies approach asking you to buy milk powder at a nearby shop (not cash). The shop is run by accomplices and charges 5-10x normal price.
