I have never surfed before in my life. Are the waves at Arugam Bay too advanced for total beginners or are there suitable spots to learn safely.

Arugam Bay is actually fantastic for beginners thanks to a dedicated beginner spot called Baby Point located right in the main bay. The waves there are gentle, slow rolling, and break over a sandy bottom which is perfect for first time surfers. The famous Main Point is reserved for intermediate and advanced surfers but Baby Point is just a five minute walk away.

Group lessons cost around twenty five dollars for two hours including the surfboard rental and rashguard. Most schools guarantee you will stand up and ride a wave during your very first lesson. The official surf season runs from May through September when the waves are most consistent.
