Is driving a rental car in Sri Lanka dangerous for foreigners.
I heard the traffic is chaotic. Is it better to just hire a driver instead.

Driving a rental car in Sri Lanka is not inherently dangerous, but it is highly stressful for foreigners. The traffic rules are treated more as suggestions, and sharing narrow roads with massive, speeding buses requires immense concentration.
If you want a truly relaxing holiday, hiring a car with a professional local driver is strongly recommended. It costs only slightly more than a self drive rental and removes all the anxiety of navigating chaotic city traffic.
If you do choose to drive, stick to the new expressways where driving is smooth and orderly. Avoid driving at night, as pedestrians and stray dogs frequently cross unlit rural roads.
