I am fascinated by the tightrope walking aspect of harvesting coconut sap. What time of day does this usually happen on the south coast.

Yes, you can still witness traditional toddy tapping along the southwestern coast between Bentota and Ambalangoda. The tappers walk ropes tied between the crowns of coconut palms to collect the sap. This is always done very early in the morning, usually between 6:00 AM and 7:30 AM before the sun gets too hot. Ask your guesthouse owner to introduce you to a local tapper for a safe viewing spot.
