We want to see the elephant gathering at Minneriya. Are the safari jeeps safe for a toddler, or is it too bumpy and hot?

Minneriya is actually one of the best parks for families. The terrain around the reservoir is mostly flat grass, not the aggressive rocky terrain of Yala. However, the jeeps are open-air and have no car seats. You must hold the baby securely in a carrier on your chest.

Go for the late afternoon safari (3:30 PM). It is much cooler, the sun is not beating down on the metal roof, and the elephants come down to the water in massive herds.

Dust and heat were my main worries. We will do the 3:30 PM slot and bring a chest carrier. Thank you!

It gets incredibly dusty. The jeeps driving in front of you will kick up red dirt. Bring a light muslin cloth to drape over the baby to protect their lungs and eyes.
