I am visiting the highlands next week. What specific plants or animals should I look for that are unique to this specific plateau.

Yes, the cloud forest at Horton Plains is a biodiversity hotspot. Look for the endemic Nelu flowers which bloom once every few years, covering the plains in purple. You will also see the gnarled Keena trees with their thick mossy bark. Keep an eye out for the endemic Purple faced Langur and the Sambar deer. The mist here is what feeds the mosses and lichens, creating a landscape that looks almost prehistoric. Arrive by 6:00 AM to see the plains before the thick clouds roll in.
