We are staying in a tea estate homestay near Haputale. I want to eat the real, spicy Tamil food the tea pluckers eat. How do I ask for this.

Estate Tamil cuisine is incredible but very different from standard Sinhalese food. It relies heavily on roasted spices, dried chilies, and hearty carbs. Just explicitly tell your host, "We want to eat exactly what you eat, at the local spice level." Ask them for Ulundu Vadai, spicy potato curries, and fresh estate black tea.

Be careful! "Local spice level" up in the estates means extremely hot. Keep a glass of milk nearby.

Ask if they can make you fresh Roti on the wood-fired griddle. It tastes amazing with a fiery onion sambol.
