We are staying at a homestay in the Hanthana hills near Kandy. What authentic local food and tea culture experiences should we ask for.

Homestays in the Kandy hills offer incredible food. Ask your host to make fresh Coconut Roti baked over a wood fire, served with Lunu Miris (spicy onion paste). Since you are in the tea country, ask for "Kahata" — plain, strong black tea brewed with fresh local leaves, usually drunk while biting into a piece of sweet palm jaggery (Hakuru).

Also ask for Kandyan-style jackfruit curry. The slow-cooked flavor is amazing in the cold hills.

If they offer to let you help scrape the coconut in the kitchen, do it! It is a really fun cultural experience.
