There are usually three trains daily. The morning express departs around 9 AM and is highly recommended as the weather is clearest, giving you the best views of the valleys before the afternoon mist rolls in.

You can easily buy an unreserved ticket at the Bandarawela station just before departure. Since many tourists get off at Ella, the train is much less crowded heading north towards Nanu Oya.
