Is Mannar Island worth visiting for off the beaten path tourists.
2 Answers from travellers
Mannar Island is absolutely a hidden gem perfect for adventurous travelers seeking authenticity. The island is famous for the Adam Bridge chain of sandbanks stretching toward India, the wild donkeys roaming freely across the landscape, and the spectacular flamingo migration between November and March. The historic Dutch Fort and the giant baobab tree believed to be over seven hundred years old are also fascinating stops.
The drive from Anuradhapura takes around three hours along generally good roads. Accommodation options are limited so book your guesthouse in advance especially during flamingo season. Try the local Mannar style crab curry at any small village restaurant for an unforgettable meal you will not find anywhere else in the country.
