Is taking the train to Jaffna worth the travel time?

We have 14 days in Sri Lanka. I want to see Jaffna, but the train ride from Colombo is 7+ hours. Is the northern culture different enough to justify the detour?

Absolutely. The North feels like a different country. It is predominantly Tamil, heavily influenced by South India. The Hindu temples (Kovils), the spicy crab curry, and the untouched islands like Delft are incredible. 14 days is just enough to include it if you take the fast Yal Devi express train.

I took the AC Intercity train to Jaffna. It was very comfortable. Rent a scooter once you arrive and explore the causeways between the islands. It’s the least touristy and most authentic part of my trip.
