Is the cloakroom at Colombo Fort Station safe for laptops?
I want to drop my heavy backpack at the train station while I explore Colombo for the day. Is the luggage storage secure?

The cloakroom is very old school (they give you a cardboard tag tied with string), but it is surprisingly secure and staffed at all times. However, lock your bag zippers with a small padlock for absolute peace of mind if leaving a laptop.
Just make sure you check their opening hours on the wall, they lock the door for 30 minutes during lunch breaks!
I left my main backpack there for 3 days while taking a side trip to Kandy. No issues at all upon return.
They charge by the piece per day (about 100 LKR). Very cheap and super convenient.
Scam Watch: colombo
Driver claims the meter is broken and quotes an inflated flat rate. Common on arrival at airport or railway stations when tourists are tired and disoriented.
Drivers wearing official-looking uniforms claim to be "government-approved" and charge 3-5x normal rates. They may have fake badges or ID cards.
Women with babies approach asking you to buy milk powder at a nearby shop (not cash). The shop is run by accomplices and charges 5-10x normal price.
