I heard there is a special tourist train with guaranteed seats you can book last minute as well as the regular Kandy to Ella service Which should I take for the best views and is the tourist one overpriced

Both run the same gorgeous hill-country line, so the scenery is identical. The dedicated tourist train (introduced a few years back) has comfortable reserved seating, large windows and an observation feel, and crucially you can often grab seats as late as the day before, which saves the stress of the regular reserved tickets selling out 30 days ahead. It costs more than a regular ticket but is far from a rip-off. The trade-off: the regular train, riding 2nd/3rd class with the doors open, is the raw, iconic experience many travelers love. If you want comfort and a guaranteed seat last minute, take the tourist train; if you want the authentic open-door vibe and saved cash, take the regular one.

Either way, sit on the right-hand side travelling from Kandy towards Ella for the best tea-country and valley views, roughly.

I took the tourist train because I decided late and could not get reserved seats otherwise. Comfortable and no regrets, the views are the same stunning ones.

Booking the tourist train for the guaranteed seat then. Thanks for the clear comparison!
