We are worried about animal cruelty. Are the elephants treated poorly during the parade.

The ethics of using elephants in the Perahera is a highly controversial and heavily debated topic. While the animals hold deep cultural and religious reverence many animal welfare groups argue that marching for hours amidst deafening drums bright lights and massive crowds is incredibly stressful for them.

Furthermore the elephants are often heavily chained and guided using traditional bullhooks. If you are deeply passionate about animal welfare you might find the spectacle highly distressing and should probably choose to skip the parade entirely.
