I have heard mixed reviews about Unawatuna with some saying it has become too touristy. Is the beach still worth visiting or should I choose a quieter alternative on the south coast.

Unawatuna has definitely become more developed and crowded compared to a decade ago but it remains one of the most beautiful and convenient beaches on the southern coast. The crescent shaped bay is protected by a reef making the water calm, warm, and safe for swimming even during the main tourist season from November through April. The golden sand beach is lined with palm trees, small cafes, and restaurants serving fresh seafood at reasonable prices. Unlike some more remote beaches Unawatuna offers excellent infrastructure including ATMs, pharmacies, restaurants, dive shops, and a wide variety of accommodation from budget guesthouses to luxury boutique hotels. The proximity to Galle Fort just fifteen minutes away by tuk tuk makes it an ideal base for exploring the southern region. For a peaceful beach experience visit in the early morning before nine or in the late afternoon after four when most day trippers have left. The central stretch can feel busy during peak hours but walk to either end of the bay for much quieter spots. Jungle Beach just a ten minute walk away through the forest offers a secluded alternative with crystal clear water and fewer crowds. If you prefer even quieter beaches consider nearby alternatives like Talpe, Habaraduwa, or the tranquil Dalawella beach famous for its iconic rope swing over turquoise water. Hiriketiya further south has become the trendy alternative for surfers and digital nomads seeking a more laid back vibe. Despite the increased tourism Unawatuna still offers a perfect balance of beach beauty, amenities, and accessibility making it a solid choice for most first time visitors to the south coast.
