Weligama is universally crowned the absolute ultimate beginner surfing destination in Sri Lanka. The bay is massively wide deeply protected and features incredibly gentle rolling white water over a completely forgiving sandy bottom.

While Dewata beach near Unawatuna is fantastic and very safe Weligama simply offers vastly more space preventing you from constantly colliding with other learners. Weligama also boasts dozens of highly professional internationally certified surf schools right on the sand.
