I want to avoid the jeep crowds of the south coast. Does Wilpattu offer a similar chance of seeing leopards and sloth bears without the traffic jams.

Wilpattu is the largest park in Sri Lanka and is significantly less crowded than Yala. While the leopard density is slightly lower, the experience is far more authentic. You won't see forty jeeps surrounding a single cat. Sloth bear sightings are actually more frequent in Wilpattu during the Palu fruit season in June and July. It is a much more peaceful wilderness experience.

The terrain in Wilpattu is different with natural lakes called Villus. This makes for beautiful photography. If you are staying in the Cultural Triangle or Negombo, Wilpattu is much easier to access than Yala.
