Yapahuwa is a spectacular hidden gem. If you hate massive tourist crowds and long queues, it is absolutely a better, more peaceful experience than Sigiriya.

It features an incredibly steep, highly ornate stone staircase guarded by ancient stone lions that is an absolute architectural masterpiece, rivaling anything found at Sigiriya.

However, Sigiriya is vastly larger, featuring extensive water gardens and world famous frescoes. Yapahuwa is smaller but offers a much more authentic, off the beaten path historical adventure.
