Island hopping or interesting day trips from the south coast?
Besides the mainland beaches, are there any islands or interesting day trips worth doing from Galle or Weligama area?

From the south: Pigeon Island (near Trinco, better as overnight), but closer options include small islands off Hikkaduwa for snorkeling, or day trips to Kanneliya rainforest or the temples around Galle. Some people do day trips to Colombo for shopping or museums. For a real change of scene, a day trip to the hill country (Ella area) is possible but long. Most visitors are happy staying on the coast and doing short boat trips or inland temple visits rather than true 'island hopping'.
The small islands near Hikkaduwa and Unawatuna for snorkeling or just a quiet beach day are nice. Ask local boat operators - they know the good ones depending on sea conditions.

Someone befriends you and offers a "once in a lifetime" opportunity to buy gems at wholesale prices and resell them abroad for huge profit. They may show you fake export certificates. The gems are worthless glass or low-quality stones.
Restaurants without visible prices. Bill arrives with inflated charges (500 LKR coconut becomes 1500 LKR). "Service charges" added without disclosure.
