We are heading to Kalpitiya. Is the 17th century Dutch Fort open to the public, what is the best time for spinner dolphin safaris, and where is the best beach party on Saturday night.

The Kalpitiya Dutch Fort was built in 1667 and has incredible coral and limestone walls. It is currently a Sri Lankan Navy base, but tourists are usually allowed inside for a guided tour if you bring your passport. For spinner dolphins, you must leave by boat at 6:30 AM before the ocean gets choppy. You can often see pods of hundreds spinning out of the water.

For the parties, stick to the kite camps along the main lagoon. Kite Centre Sri Lanka and Surf Kite Kalpitiya throw massive Saturday night BBQ parties with DJs playing deep house right on the sand.

Be prepared for the heat inside the fort ruins. There is almost zero shade, so do the history tour early before you hit the water for kite surfing and partying.
