Knuckles Mountain Range - guided trek or can I go independently?
I'm an experienced hiker. Can I do the Knuckles Range trails on my own or do I need a guide and permits?

You can do some of the easier trails independently (like the one starting from Riverstone or Deanston), but for the full ridge walks and to reach places like Knuckles Peak or Lakegala you really need a guide. The area is vast, trails are poorly marked, and sudden weather changes can be dangerous. Permits are required for the conservation area - your guide will arrange them.
There are some beautiful community-based tourism villages now offering guided day hikes with local knowledge. Much better than going alone and getting lost.
