To experience incredible wildlife near Arugam Bay, you must book an evening boat safari on the Pottuvil Lagoon. It is a brilliant, quiet alternative to the bumpy jeep safaris in Kumana.
Local fishermen gently pole traditional wooden canoes through the dense mangrove channels. As the sun sets, you have an exceptionally high chance of spotting massive wild elephants coming down to the waters edge to drink peacefully.
The lagoon is also teeming with massive water monitors, crocodiles, and incredible birdlife. It is a highly relaxing, deeply authentic wildlife experience completely away from the noisy coastal crowds.
