Surf instructor so the learning to surf picture especially the crucial SEASON point Best beginner spots Sri Lanka is GREAT for learning to surf with famously gentle beginner friendly beach breaks the two main hubs WELIGAMA (south coast) THE classic beginner spot a long gentle sandy bottomed beach break with mellow rolling waves perfect for first timers tons of surf schools and board hire it is where most people learn ARUGAM BAY (east coast) a world famous surf town with a range of breaks including beginner friendly spots nearby (Baby Point Whisky Point and the main point for when you progress) great surf school scene other spots Hikkaduwa Mirissa (south) and Midigama for progression but for a COMPLETE beginner Weligama (south) or the beginner breaks around Arugam Bay (east) are the go to The SEASON the KEY thing and the coasts DO switch with the monsoon this matters hugely right NOW in JUNE we are in the SOUTHWEST monsoon so the SOUTH and WEST coasts (Weligama Hikkaduwa Mirissa) are in their OFF season (wetter rougher choppier less ideal for learning) while the EAST coast (ARUGAM BAY) is in its PRIME surf season (dry offshore clean waves the east coast season is roughly May to September) so for JUNE the EAST coast (Arugam Bay) is the BETTER choice to learn it is at its best now while the south is off (you CAN still sometimes learn at Weligama in June but conditions are less reliable the east is the prime call this month) so head EAST in June Lessons and cost surf LESSONS are widely available and affordable (a group or private lesson is cheap by Western standards) board HIRE is cheap too the surf schools provide boards and instruction beginner packages are common it is very accessible How to start book a lesson at a reputable surf school (good reviews qualified friendly instructors safety conscious) start on a soft foam board in the gentle whitewater you will likely stand up in your first lesson or two it is very learnable here So to learn as a beginner head to WELIGAMA (south the classic gentle learner beach) or ARUGAM BAY (east) BUT crucially for JUNE choose the EAST coast (Arugam Bay) which is in its prime dry surf season now while the south and west are off in the monsoon book a lesson at a reputable surf school (cheap boards and instruction provided) and you will be standing up in no time pick the coast that is in season and you are set

Weligama or Arugam Bay for beginners but crucially for June choose the east coast Arugam Bay which is in its prime dry surf season now while the south and west are off in the monsoon and book a cheap lesson at a reputable surf school this is exactly the where and when to learn I needed the season point is key thank you
