Sunrise is universally considered vastly superior. If you hike up around 5:30 AM, the air is incredibly crisp and clear. You will watch the sun slowly illuminate the massive Ella Gap and the towering Ella Rock in brilliant golden light. By late afternoon, heavy mist and dense clouds almost always roll into the valley, completely obscuring the panoramic views and often bringing heavy rain showers, making a sunset hike a massive gamble.
