New Sri Lanka Railways online booking app reality check does it actually work
I read there is now an official online train booking platform for Sri Lanka Railways including foreigner tickets Does it actually work in 2026 or do I still need a third party agent How does it compare with 12go and Bookaway for Kandy to Ella

Honest 2026 picture. The official Sri Lanka Railways online ticketing platform (seatreservation.railway.gov.lk plus mobile app) DOES now work, opens reserved seats 30 days in advance at midnight Sri Lanka time, accepts foreign Visa/Mastercard, and emails you an e-ticket with QR code that the conductor scans. Quality has improved a lot. The reality: at 00:00 on the day reservations open for popular tourist trains like the Kandy-Ella scenic service, the official site gets hammered and can lag or time out. Third-party agents (12go, Bookaway, Visit Sri Lanka Tours and similar) cache inventory and often manage to grab seats when the official site struggles, but they charge a 30-50 percent markup. For Kandy to Ella specifically: try the official site first the moment booking opens; if it fails, fall back to a third-party agent and accept the markup. The premium "tourist train" (separate from regular reserved) has guaranteed seats up to 2-3 days out, easier last-minute fallback.
Trying the official platform at midnight day-30, third-party backup. Danke!
I used the official platform last week with a Norwegian card and it worked. Got 2nd class reserved Kandy-Ella for around 1,300 LKR. Same seat on 12go was 2,500. Worth the effort.
Before booking, decide which DIRECTION you want: Kandy-to-Ella has the late-morning/midday light on the tea slopes; Ella-to-Kandy has gentler light on the valleys. Book accordingly, not just whichever has seats.
