Excellent option for a solo traveler. The Yal Devi night train (and the dedicated overnight Northern line service) runs Colombo Fort to Jaffna in about 7 to 9 hours overnight. 1st class A/C sleeper has lockable 2-berth cabins, 2nd class sleeper has open 4-berth bunks with curtains. Both are reasonably comfortable. For a solo female, 1st class sleeper is the most secure option, and 2nd class sleeper is also widely used by women travelers; bring a small lock for your luggage to the bunk frame. Sleeper berths open for booking 30 days ahead and 1st class sells out FAST on weekends; book online or via a railway booking agent the moment the window opens. Pack a light fleece (A/C is cold), a sleep mask, and snacks. Lock your phone to your wrist while sleeping.

I did 2nd class sleeper solo, no issues at all. Carriage attendants are around all night and the other passengers were a mix of families and workers.

Booking 1st class sleeper exactly 30 days out. Spasibo!

If you cannot get 1st class sleeper, AVOID 3rd class for overnight, it is unreserved, packed and uncomfortable for sleeping. Pay the upgrade.
