Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage vs. Udawalawe Transit Home? Which is more ethical?
I want to see baby elephants, but I don't want to support animal cruelty. I've seen photos of elephants chained up at Pinnawala, but travel agents keep recommending it.
I also heard about the "Elephant Transit Home" in Udawalawe. What is the difference? Which one should I visit?

If animal welfare is your priority, the choice is clear.
Pinnawala (The "Zoo" Model): Pinnawala is a commercial attraction. The elephants are often chained (especially the males), they are handled by mahouts with hooks, and tourists can touch/feed them. It is more of a zoo environment.
Udawalawe Transit Home (The "Rehab" Model): This is a true rehabilitation center for orphaned calves. No human contact is allowed. You watch from a viewing platform while the babies are fed milk, and then they are released back into the wild when they are strong enough.
Verdict: Go to the Udawalawe Elephant Transit Home (ETH) during feeding times (9 AM, 12 PM, 3 PM). It is heartwarming, ethical, and the money goes directly to their milk powder and rehabilitation.
