Yala National Park vs. Udawalawe - Is Yala too crowded?
My partner and I want to see elephants and hopefully a leopard. We keep hearing that Yala has leopards but is basically a traffic jam of jeeps. Udawalawe seems better for elephants but lacks leopards.
We only have time for one safari. Is Yala worth the hassle, or should we skip it for a more peaceful experience in Udawalawe?

This depends entirely on your patience levels!
The Reality of Yala: Yes, the stories are true. If a leopard is spotted, 50 jeeps will rush to that spot. It can get chaotic and dusty. However, Yala has the highest leopard density in the world. If seeing a leopard is a non-negotiable bucket list item, you must go to Yala. Try to book a "full day" safari rather than just the morning half-day; the park empties out between 11 AM and 2 PM, giving you a much quieter experience.
The Case for Udawalawe: If you just want to see animals in peace and love elephants, Udawalawe is superior. You are 99% guaranteed to see wild elephants close up, and the jeep drivers are generally more relaxed.
My Verdict: If you hate crowds, choose Udawalawe. If you want a leopard chance and can tolerate the "jeep jam," choose Yala (or look into Wilpattu in the North-West for leopards without the crowds!).
few options.
yala has better floral and faunal diversity than udawalawe. if you really in to spotting leopards, there are more chances at yala national park. there were few leopard spottings at udawalawe. but rare.
crowd- everyone want to see leopard. everyone knows yala and vilpattu parks are the best options. so, it could be crowded.
but there are 6 blocks in yala. i ususally reccommend block 5 (galge or Lunugamwehera entrances) or katagamuwa entrance of block 1
udawalawe
usually less crowded. but still there are more chances to see many jeeps during tourist season.
