Yes, Gal Oya Lodge is the ultimate hidden gem for wildlife on the east side. It is a stunning eco-lodge completely immersed in the jungle. They offer unique boat safaris on the Senanayake reservoir where you can watch wild elephants swimming between islands. It is entirely disconnected from the surfer party vibe of the coast.

Usually no. They are designed for a digital detox. Prepare for fans and reading books.

Watch out for monkeys stealing your breakfast if you eat on the balcony.

Kudumbigala sanctuary is nearby too, great ancient ruins hidden in the wild.

Gal Oya Lodge also arranges walks with the indigenous Vedda community. Highly recommend it.

We stayed near Kumana National Park. There are some rustic cabanas there, but you have to bring all your own food and water.
