The hike to Riverston Peak is surprisingly manageable. From the telecommunications tower access point, it is only a relatively short, windy walk to the summit, making it accessible for most fitness levels.
While the main peak path is clear, if you want to explore the surrounding Pitawala Pathana grasslands or find the hidden Mini Worlds End cliff drop, hiring a local guide is definitely recommended so you do not get lost in the mist.
The weather up there changes drastically and quickly. Always pack a good windbreaker and be prepared for sudden heavy rain, even if it looks sunny when you start the drive from Matale.
