We want to see elephants without the massive jeep crowds of Yala Are there adventure safaris on the East Coast like Gal Oya that are safe

Gal Oya National Park is the absolute best hidden gem. Instead of dusty jeeps, you do a boat safari on the massive Senanayake Samudraya reservoir. You can watch wild elephants literally swimming between the islands. It is completely silent, safe, and you will likely be the only tourists there.

Yes, there are very few boats available. Book it through Gal Oya Lodge if you can.

Wasgamuwa National Park is also great during the off-season. Far less crowded than Minneriya.

Kaudulla is right next to Minneriya but gets half the traffic. Great alternative for the Gathering.
