Unawatuna and parts of Bentota are generally calmer for swimming. Weligama and Mirissa can have stronger currents depending on the season. Always ask locals or hotel staff about current conditions before swimming — rip currents are a real risk on many beaches. Never swim alone, and avoid going in if the sea looks rough or after heavy rain. Some beaches have lifeguards during peak season but many don't. If in doubt, hotel pools are the safest option. Conditions change daily, so checking locally each day is important rather than relying on general advice.

Unawatuna is often calmer. Always ask locally about conditions that day. Pools are safest if unsure.
