Violent crime against tourists is very rare, but walking the Galle Road at 3 AM is highly dangerous for two reasons: speeding night buses and stray dogs. The road is poorly lit and has very narrow shoulders. If you have been drinking, you can easily stumble into traffic. Always flag down a tuk-tuk or pre-book a driver. It is not worth risking your life to save 500 rupees.

The stray dogs are the biggest issue. They pack up and get super territorial at night.

Tuk-tuks wait right outside clubs like Lamana and Trax. Just negotiate the price before getting in.
