The stilt fishermen you see prominently displayed along the main highway near Ahangama and Koggala are almost entirely paid actors posing for tourists, and they will immediately demand money if you point a camera at them. To see authentic, working fishermen, you must travel further east towards Weligama bay very early in the morning around dawn, where locals still fish genuinely without soliciting tourists.
