Tangalle beaches are beautiful but the waves look terrifying. Are there any hidden, calm coves nearby where we can swim safely without massive crowds.

Tangalle is famous for dangerous shore breaks, but there are hidden safe spots. Head to Parewella Natural Swimming Area (a calm rock pool protected by a reef), or take a tuk-tuk to Silent Beach (Amanwella). Silent Beach is incredibly pristine and usually empty, though you still have to watch the ocean swell. Blue Beach Island in Nilwella is also fantastic and very quiet.

Do not swim at Marakolliya or Rekawa beaches. The rip currents there pull you straight out to sea.

Silent Beach is the most beautiful beach I have ever seen. Bring your own water though, no shops.

Hiriketiya is also close by and very calm for swimming, but it gets crowded.

Yes, near the rocks. Wear water shoes if you are exploring the edges.
