The Nine Arch Bridge gets insanely crowded. Are there any hidden hiking trails above the bridge where we can take photos of the train without 500 people in the shot.

Yes, do not stand on the bridge itself! Before you reach the bridge from the Ella town side, look for small dirt paths leading UP into the tea plantations on the left. The Asanka Cafe is up there, and if you keep climbing past it, you get a completely unobstructed, top-down view of the bridge emerging from the jungle. It is the best photo spot.

The morning mist over the bridge at 6 AM is beautiful anyway.

What time does the train actually pass.

The blue train usually passes around 9:30 AM, 11:30 AM, and 3:30 PM, but it is frequently delayed. Ask your guesthouse for the daily update.

Watch out for leeches if you hike into the tea bushes, especially if it rained.

If you go at 6:30 AM, the bridge is totally empty, even though there is no train.

The cafes up there will charge you 500 LKR just to stand in their yard to take a photo. Better to hike into the actual tea bushes.
