Local so the postcard and post picture good news your tradition is very doable Does the post work YES Sri Lanka has a functioning postal service (Sri Lanka Post) with POST OFFICES in every town and city it is reliable enough for postcards and letters (it can be a little slow but cards do arrive) so you can happily keep your tradition Where to buy postcards and stamps POSTCARDS are sold at tourist spots souvenir shops bookshops and stalls near the main sites (Galle Fort the cultural sites Kandy the tourist areas) STAMPS buy them at a POST OFFICE (the surest place) and sometimes where postcards are sold or at hotels just make sure you get the correct international postage the post office staff will tell you the right stamp for a postcard to Europe POST OFFICES every town has one (look for the sign often a colonial era building) the main post offices in the cities are easy to find (Colombo has the grand old General Post Office area and branches everywhere) staff are helpful you can also often post cards from your hotel reception (they send it for you) or a postbox Cost and time CHEAP a postcard to Europe costs very little (a small stamp fee) TIME allow a couple of weeks or more (it is not fast surface and air vary so post early in your trip if you want them to arrive while you are still travelling or accept they may reach home after you do) Dependability reasonably dependable for postcards (the odd one can go astray as anywhere but most arrive) for anything VALUABLE or important use a courier not regular post but for postcards regular post is fine and part of the charm How to do it buy a postcard at a tourist shop take it to a POST OFFICE (or your hotel) buy the correct international stamp from the post office write it and post it in the box or hand it over allow a couple of weeks So yes keep your postcard tradition the post works find a POST OFFICE in any town for the correct stamps (cheap) buy postcards at tourist shops and souvenir stalls post early in your trip (allow a couple of weeks to Europe) and they will arrive a lovely reliable enough charm or hand them to your hotel to send your cards will make it home

I posted several cards from a small town post office and they all arrived home in about two to three weeks the staff were lovely and helped me with the right stamps post early so you are not waiting and enjoy the little ritual of finding the post office in each town
